I buy double walled stainless steel tumblers (unless otherwise stated on product) topped with high quality polyester glitter. The epoxy used to cover the design is FDA compliant, UV resistant (meaning it doesn't get a yellowish tint to it as quickly as some others), and has a heat rating of 500 degrees.
Why are the tumbler's so expensive?
I feel ya'. I used to think a cup for $40 was outrageous. And then I started this journey to make them. How hard could it be, right? LOL! First of all, not only do I have to buy the stainless steel cup (that I cannot buy much cheaper than you can buy one at Wal-Mart, Target, Costco, or any other discount chain). There are so many other supplies that are needed to make the cup including glitter, epoxy, vinyl, waterslides, spray paint, sandpaper, the equipment to keep the cup spinning so it dries correctly, mod podge, acrylic paints, just to name some of the things I use everyday to make a cup.
Secondly, since every cup is handmade, it is unique to that cup. It is it's own work of art or, as every artist knows, a work of heart. I try my hardest to make sure the cups I produce are the best that I can and tend to pour more of myself into each cup than is required. To me, that is what distinguishes a cup you can pay $15-$20 for in store that is mass-produced and my cups.
How long does it take to make a tumbler?
To answer this, I need to explain how the process works. Once a custom order is made, I will design the cup, send the customer a mock-up of the design to make sure we are on the same page. Once that is approved, the cup can begin being made. Each cup takes at minimum 2 coats of epoxy, but usually 3, and I wait 8-10 hours for the coat of epoxy to cure before another piece of the design can be added and the cup epoxied again. The epoxy has to fully cure before it can be mailed/delivered which takes 3 days. At minimum, it takes 5 days to make a cup. However, I do have other cup orders and obligations so be sure to check the current TAT (Turn Around Time) prior to ordering.
